"Johnson City Jinx" Beaten as Mercer Triumphs Over East Tennessee!
For the first time in Mercer history, the Bears won a game at East Tennessee State University! Mercer came out a winner on the 82-77 scoreboard, and in the process, knocked off one of the Atlantic Sun Conference’s co-leaders. The win evened Mercer’s overall record at 13-13, and improved their A-Sun record to 9-7. Meanwhile, ETSU fell to 14-13 on the season, and 10-6 in league.
Mercer rode to victory on the hot shooting of E.J. Kusnyer, who led the Bears in scoring with 21 points, hitting 7-of-10 from the field. By connecting on five baskets from beyond the three-point arc, the Pittsburgh, Pa. native assumed the national lead for most three-point baskets made this season, with 87. Kusnyer’s long ball baskets also tied Mercer's single-season record for treys made. He now shares the mark first set by Reggie Titus in 1988-89.
Mercer jumped out to a double-digit first half lead on two occasions, the first of which made the score 27-17 at the 6:03 juncture on two free throws by James Florence. The two charity tosses also gave Florence 2,226 career points, to tie him with former NBA great Ralph Sampson at 181st on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list.
“You’ve got to have a deep bench, and you have to get contributions from everyone to be successful,”said MU head coach Bob Hoffman.
