It's summertime! What are your family's vacation plans?:

Jonah’s on Johnston

Recently, I travelled to Forsyth’s gorgeous historic downtown to dine at Jonah’s on Johnston, a local pizzeria serving calzones, specialty pizzas, and desserts.  I had only heard of it before, but it had been highly recommend by a friend, so I thought I would try it out.  When I walked up to Jonah’s, there were people enjoying the final few bites of their meal and the beautiful Georgia weather we had been experiencing.  It looked like they had been there a while, but weren’t in any real hurry to leave.

As I passed them and walked inside the very clean restaurant, I was greeted with the sweet aromas of baking pizza pies and the sight of a dozen desserts on display near the register.  I noticed that the customers have a clear view into the kitchen, which almost seems to be on display, as if to celebrate the art of baking a pie as much as the act of eating one.  It really engages all five senses, and provides for a very nice authentic experience.  Before I arrived, I decided that I was hungry, but not starving.
After this first impression, I quickly changed my mind!

I was seated promptly, and ordered a helping of seasoned garlic breadsticks with a spicy marinara dipping sauce.  It was an exceptional appetizer!  I strongly recommend it, and will be trying to recreate it in my kitchen in the near future. The breadsticks were crisp but not overly toasted, and the marinara sauce was truly exceptional.  I’m not exactly sure what spices were added to the marinara sauce, but I can tell you that they had the effect of making the diner want to come back for more!

After the appetizer, I ordered a Florentine pizza, complete with fresh spinach, ricotta cheese, onions, garlic, and a host of other spices.  When it was served, I knew that I had made a great decision in coming to this restaurant.  The pizza was hot and the aroma caused me to decide that I was now, in fact, starving!  I nearly inhaled the pie, but tried on a few occasions to slow down and savor the pizza.  It was to no avail.  I think I set a personal record in pizza eating!

Overall, the experience was worthwhile, and I recommend Jonah’s if you are craving pizza in the Forsyth area.  The food was great and it was reasonably priced, too.  Looking back on it, though, I can’t help but think about those people on Jonah’s porch that I saw when walking in.  I know it oftentimes isn’t their intention, but one can’t help but feel that maybe restaurants like Jonah’s got it right.  Maybe we should spend a little less time in the hustle of everyday life, and a little more time sitting on the front porch with our closest friends, watching the world go by, while enjoying a nice hot pizza pie.
