College Hill Area Improvement Projects Granted Over $200K

Nineteen projects to enhance historic College Hill received $203,900 recently, as part of the Knight Neighborhood Challenge, a grant program to fund residents’ best ideas for strengthening a sense of place in the area. The awards in this second round of the challenge range from $450 for cleaning up graffiti to $94,518 for creating a design plan for Tattnall Square Park.  Recipients are both residents of the College Hill area and Macon’s established institutions. They offered ideas to increase safety, cleanliness and green living, to boost public spaces and to contribute to the creative side of this historic link between Mercer University and downtown Macon.

Byron Better Hometown Program Renews Accreditation

Byron Better Hometown was recently named as a 2010 National Main Street Program.  The program, managed by Regina Mansfield, was evaluated and successfully passed all the ten standards of performance that are required to maintain its accreditation.
 
Some of the jobs that the BHT performs include community projects like the Christmas Parade, Gingerbread and Cottontail Markets, Downtown Farmers/Artisans Market, Easter Egg Hunt, and assisting with Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Battle of Byron, and Peach Festival and community events.  The monthly newsletters are vital in keeping the community informed of activities.  Upcoming projects include marketing/website development for the Byron Conference Center/Auditorium.  For more information, contact Regina Mansfield at (478) 956-5555.

Auction and Raffle Brings In Over $200,000 for Museum of Aviation

More than 1,000 people showed up to bid on a total of 517 donated items at the recent Museum of Aviation Foundation’s Auction and Raffle. The event brought in a gross total of $224,000 for the Museum of Aviation, the most items ever donated since the auctions started 25 years ago! 

Robins Federal Credit Union Members and Staff Save Lives


Thirty members of the community, including Robins Federal Credit Union members and employees, recently participated in Robins Federal Credit Union’s semiannual blood drive, to benefit the American Red Cross’s blood supply.  Twenty-seven units of blood were collected, and each unit of blood can save up to three lives.
 
That means the blood collected at has the potential to touch over 80 lives! The semiannual blood drive was held at Robins Federal’s Jack G. Byrd Learning Center, and was open to anyone who wished to donate.
 

AFA Carl Vinson Memorial Chapter Announces Performance Awards

The Air Force Association (AFA) Carl Vinson Memorial Chapter recently made two quarterly performance award presentations at the 402nd Electronics Maintenance Group.  The awardees were John "Barry" Williams, Electronics Mechanic and Perlita Walds, Equipment Custodian.
